School Profile
District Overview
The Kiski Area School District’s 3 townships and 5 boroughs encompass approximately 104 square miles of Westmoreland and Armstrong Counties. 
The district’s borders extend from the Allegheny River to the Kiskiminetas River and is located approximately 33 Miles northeast of metropolitan
Pittsburgh.Many of the 30,000 residents are engaged in professional, technical, and rural occupations. The families that make up Kiski Area
are a mixture of people that have lived here for generations, to new and young families who are finding this area to be a perfect combination of suburban and rural living. Included in the district are approximately 255 professional staff members that serve 4,289 students in the 7 elementary schools, 1 intermediate school, and 1 high school.The district is a member of the Northern Westmoreland Area Career Technical Center and is accredited by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. 
 
Kiski Area High School
KAHS is a four year (9-12) comprehensive high school with an enrollment of 1461 students. The faculty is comprised of 82 certified staff, 41% of whom hold advanced degrees. The school day consists of eight periods, 43 minutes in length. Classes meet five days a week,
over 4 nine week periods, covering a total of 36 weeks. 
 
Graduation Requirements
In grades 9-12, every student is required to obtain at least 23.5 units of credit. A unit is equivalent to 120 clock hours of instruction.

One credit classes meet everyday for the entire school year; half credit classes meet every day for one semester,
quarter credit classes meet every day for one nine weeks. 
 
Senior Graduation Project
All senior class members are required to complete a formal research paper or project within the scope of their chosen
high school course of studies that demonstrates their ability to apply, analyze, synthesize, evaluate and communicate significant
knowledge and understanding.

Westmoreland County Community College.
 
Class Rank
Class Rank for seniors is calculated on the grade point average from 9th, 10th, and 11th grade and up to,
and including, the third nine-week marking period of the senior year. 
 
Weighted courses have a multiplier of 1.12 for Advanced Placement courses and 1.06 for Honors courses,
and is only applied to grades 74% and higher. 
 
Curriculum
Kiski Area High School offers a wide variety of courses in each of the four curricular areas: Academic, Business,
General Practical Arts, and Career-Technology. 
 
Academic Curriculum
Students select a concentration in scientific, cultural, or liberal and fine arts.
 
Business Curriculum
Students select a concentration in Administrative Assistant/Secretarial Science or Accounting Techniques
 
General Practical Arts Curriculum
Students select a concentration in Technology Education or Family and Consumer Science
 
Career-Technology Curriculum
Students complete the core subjects at KAHS and select a concentration in Auto Mechanics, Carpentry, Commercial Art,
Computer Technology, Cosmetology, Electronics Technology, Culinary Arts, Machine Technology, Marketing, Masonry,
Medical Assistant, or Welding that is completed at the Northern Westmoreland Career and Technology Center.
 
Grading Policy
Kiski Area students are evaluated on a weighted and unweighted percent averages. Grades are recorded as percentages.

Student Testing
Standardized testing measures a student’s abilities and progress and helps the administration and staff to examine the overall
effectiveness of curriculum and instruction.
